Dave “Philpo” Phillips and Steve “Monty” Ridley rolled back the decades today (Sunday 18 August) when they won the Season 2019 Mens Waterloo Pairs title after a superb days bowling at the home of bowls … The Waterloo in Blackpool.

Having received a bye in the 1st round they then faced Andy Thornton and Stuart Mort in the last 16. Davva led superbly throughout the game and what luck was going also went Philpo’s and Monty’s way and they cruised home 21 – 5.

In the quarter-final they faced Steve Barber and Paul Morris and were always in control of the game and eventually won 21 – 17.

In the semi-final they faced Richard Gibbs and Tom Brown from Derbyshire and at one point trailed 14 - 7 before launching a stunning comeback to win 21 – 17.

In the final they faced Nigel Hughes and Andy Delooze from the Wirral. Dave and Monty started well and led 7 – 4 only for Nigel and Andy to then break out to lead 12 – 7. Dave and Monty started to “chip” away at the deficit but then came the turning point in the game … Nigel led the jack out at 13 – 12 and went into the full corners towards the pub. The nearest counting bowl and I kid you not was nearly 3 yards away but the Lloyds boys counted 3 and went into a 15 – 13 lead and never looked back. The final score was 21 – 17.

What a win … What a day … What an achievement

Update … Davva was this morning attending a physiotherapy session to hopefully get some relief from the sore back he’s now got as a result of carrying Monty all day! Jeepers …
